SET DESIGN
This photoshoot is the product of a project in an art direction course in which we were asked to build a photography set inspired by an artist. We created a set inspired by Frida Kahlo. We have chosen to use jewel tones of royal blue and deep red that are representative of Frida’s home in Mexico as well as traditional Mexican colors. The floral motif that is repeated throughout the set is symbolic of Frida’s fascination with nature that was prevalent all throughout her paintings. We also wanted to include items that represent her Catholic religious beliefs and Mexican culture - we used crosses, wall decorations and created religious shrines all throughout the set. You might have noticed we ditched the unibrow - we wanted to give Frida Kahlo a modern spin. We also took inspiration from a specific painting of Frida's in which she lays in a bathtub surrounded by objects from her life.
